Entry from: Ashgabat, Turkmenistan Entry Title: "Ashgabat, the capital of the Golden Age" Entry: "Salam, natuerlich ist auch Ashgabat auf dem Programm. Hier gibt es eigentlich nichts historisches zu sehen, da die Stadt 1948 von einem Erdbeben der Staerke 9,0 zerstoert wurde, 2/3 der Einwohner starben dabei. Die Stadt wurde anschliessend sowjetisch wieder aufgebaut und seit 1991 dann unter Praesident Turkmenbashi und dem goldenen Zeitalter (und dank des Oel- und Gasgeldes) nach seiner Vision gestaltet. Seine Vision: Weisser Marmor und Gol...

Akhal-Teke "Heavenly Horse" is one of the most beautiful and oldest equine breeds in the world that flows directly from the Turkmen horse. This breed was created by the Teke tribe that lived in the oasis where Turkmenistan is a national symbol.
Nury Khalmamedov(1940-1983) was a native Turkmen composer in the Soviet era. After studying at Moscow conservatory with Anatoly Alexandrov (he was also neglected or forgotten Russian composer-pianist), he composed serious orchestral works like symphonic poem "Turkmenistan"(1963) and "Symphony No.1"(1968) while composing many film music like "Plunge"(1965). Especially Symphony was the first Symphony composed by turkmen composers (Mukhatov's Symphony No.1 was composed in 1974). Unfortunately he died at 44 (I don't know how he died). On the contrary, he wrote some piano pieces, mostly in his early period when he studied under Anatoly Alexandrov. It was when Ballade was composed. In this piece "Ballade" means Turkmen traditional song-art sung by professional singers bakhshi. Like trovatore in...

Turkmenistan is one of the most isolated places in Central Asia – known for draconian dictators and the driest desert in the world. The capital is so empty it seems almost sinister. Monuments and buildings rise high in the skyline, brutalist and imposing. Sharp, strong edges dominate the plane above. But here, too, are people who live and suffer just like anyone else. They walk lonely in the desolate streets, laughing in the shadow of mountains. Outside the city, the world is different; the desert is unforgiving. The wastes seem to go on forever – thirsty sand and empty skies. Only an arresting, daunting a place like this could be home to the Gates of Hell.
